Summer Wrangler Job Description

Being a summer wrangler is not for the faint of heart. The days are long and hot with lots of heavy lifting…but they’re also very rewarding. About half of our campers have never ridden a horse before and we get to create an environment for them to be safe, have fun, and learn something that can be lifelong memories and skills. It can be very challenging for our campers so, besides a strong work ethic and heat tolerance, wranglers need to be understanding, patient, and creative when communicating information to campers. Other qualities that make someone a candidate to be a wrangler include humility, teachability, perseverance, and tolerant of allergens and the smell of manure (seriously). Tasks include grooming and saddling horses; daily animal chores for horses, cows, chickens, and ducks; supervising children and horses with an eye toward group control and risk reduction; teaching basic horsemanship activities on the ground in front of a group of campers with the help of an assistant; helping enforce policies and procedures; and giving repeated reminders for things like posture on a horse. Wrangler candidates need to be at least 16 years old, and available to be at all of the staff training and camp sessions of camp.
